I've downloaded jZip and started to try to compress some files on my PC, starting with my saved pictures. In my first folder I've got about 80 or so pictures. I created a new archive with zJip, selected this particular folder and clicked Add; I notice that the compression ratio on the majority of them is at 1%. I was thinking the ratio would be much higher, that I'd be able to save a lot of space on my hard disc and maybe even squeeze the file sizes down enough to get them all on a CD. (Uncompressed, I have about 1.6GB there total - including the one I mentioned above).

Any ideas? Have I done something wrong? Do I have bad expectations?

jbcrml,

The compression ratio is a result of the algorithm used and the type of file that you are compressing. Some files compress very well like text files, binary files do not compress as well for example executable files and files that are already compressed can hardly be further compressed.... for example if you are trying to compress a Zip archive file you wont get much if at all. JPG files are already compressed and thus no matter what compresson utility you are going to try and use you would get almost no compression, 1% or even 0%.
